U.S. President Joe Biden called for a ban on assault weapons and a stricter focus on gun control Tuesday, following Monday’s tragic mass shooting at a King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado.
“We can ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines in this country, once again,” Biden said at the White House.
Webster’s Dictionary defines “assault weapon” as “any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms.”
“This is not and should not be a partisan issue,” Biden said. “It’s an American issue that will save lives, American lives. We must act.”
Biden’s comments have prompted severe criticism from conservative-leaning individuals and groups. Conservative author and speaker Dinesh D’Souza took to Twitter to criticize the gun control rhetoric that is being spread surrounding the shooting.
“Remind me but after Muslim radicals killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11 did anyone call for outlawing box cutters or airplanes? #GunControl,” D’Souza tweeted.
